The TamTam Gong

The "Tam Tam" gong is a flat gong made from different materials like copper, brass and iron. It has a long supending tone and many formants and hisiing sounds, sounding like a deep bell if struck with a soft mallet and like a loud chime if struck with something hard. It is used as a signal in ensembles and at the opera. In ancient days, gongs like this as even big drums have been used in the village tower in order to call the people in.
